Health and Safety - Concerns

I generally donot talk about ill health to anyone.  I talk about health.  I also insist on safety.

First two safety incidents -

a) A senior citizen going for a walk was struck on middle of his head by a strong object. He fell unconscious on the road and someone rescued him and admitted him to the hospital. Nobody knows what struck him.
b) A young professional was riding fast in his new two wheeler and hit a pole in the foot path. His face split open in two halves and his jaws broke. The roadside sugarcane seller admitted him in the hospital and informed some of his recent contacts in the mobile.

Safety issues can hit young and old any time.
1. Safety issues need not happen just at the road. It can happen in the home. Also ensure your guests and visitors are not affected by your safety shortcomings.
2. If your parents are going for a walk, ensure they carry the important contact numbers, emergency medicines, and their mobile phone.
3. Now the summer is approaching, let your parents not be exposed to the hot sun. Be aware of the sun stroke.
4. We would have often heard the humble Aspirin/Anacin helps at the time of chest pain and one gets sufficient time to reach the nearest hospital.  (Check with your family doctor and get a double confirmation on this belief).

With respect to health, I have few concerns -

a) The elderly people tend to take medicines more and more without taking control on the food practice.
b) The elderly people often given up one course of treatment and move to the next one.
c) There is also a common tendency of self medication in India.  (Almost, everyone is a doctor in India !)
d) When it comes to the young and the middle-aged,  the more they know of the hotels, and food varieties, the less we know of health.  How many here can talk of protein, carbohydrates, starch?
e)  How many of my contacts would do something, on a regular basis
    (i) to prevent illness
(ii) to gain strength / stamina
    (iii) to slow ageing
    (iv) to beat stress

In the information era, knowledge is free. We know what is good and bad.  Despite knowing burgers and coke bad to health, we reach out. We celebrate every occassion with fat. We soak our internal organs with acids, and all chemical combinations on earth. And different types of addictions and loads of justifications for those addictions.  We forget that we have to be alive and strong to support our kids till they grow and settle in life.  Yes, a young, fat professional, died of heart attack in his early 30's and he was a father of 10 month old few months back.

We have passed our exams, but we have not learned really on health.

Its a wake up call for all the readers on safety and health.

My 7 am Arivu

I am suffering from a very bad eye lid boil. Once in a while, I look into the mirror to see myself as a 7am Arivu logo.

Its a coincidence that its 07/07

The boil could have been because of body heat.

Or some microbes in the eyelid

I hoped my dad would have some naamakatti  (white power block used by Iyengaras to wear the naamam).  Its a wonderful home remedy - applying paste of it before going to bed would have dried up the boil next morning.

I also tried applying hot water so that the infection area gets cleaned.

Eyelid Infection

I have my left eye infected now. My friends said, its because of the body heat and every one suggested on what I should be focusing on to keep my body cool.

Happened to meet a family dentist, and she said the medical practitioners do not buy the idea of 'body heat' for eye swelling. She said it could be because of the eye lid infection due to blockage of oil secretion.

Getting better.

My new health rhythms

I am into new health rhythms

  • Deep Breathing in the mornings

  • Oil Pulling

  • Fruit Bowls for lunch

  • Acupressure

  • Focus on effective food combining

  • No to dairy products

Still flexible, try to adopt these most of the times on a weekly basis. I really felt sick of myself when I fell sick recently. Regarding my body as a temple, I vowed not to disregard it anymore with careless treatment. Hope I will have visible results in six months or so.

2 New Health Issues I learnt recently

There are several health issues we read about and we take it only serious only when it hits us or someone dear to us. I learnt about two health issues.

a) Hernia in women :  I know hernia in men, and its known as குடலிறக்கம் and I always visualized it as the abdomen area lowering below its position, in literal sense. But it can happen to women too. This is what I learnt through online search:

A hernia is an abnormal protrusion, or bulging out, of part of an organ through the tissues that normally contain it. In this condition, a weak spot or opening in a body wall, often due to laxity of the muscles, allows part of the organ to protrude.

A hernia may develop in almost any part of the body; however, the muscles of the abdominal wall are most commonly affected.

A hernia may develop in almost any part of the body; however, the muscles of the abdominal wall are most commonly affected.
b) Increase in WBC: Increase in White Blood Cells count indicates infection. This is what I get from the online search:

A high blood count (above 30000 cells per micro-liter) indicates is not a specific disease by itself but indicates infection, systemic illness, inflammation, allergy, leukemia and tissue injury caused due to burns. The count of white blood cells also increases when certain medicines like antibiotics or anti-seizure drugs. Smoking and too much of mental stress also increases the count of the white blood cells in the body. Also, once the count of white blood cell is on the higher side, the risk of cardiovascular mortality also increases. It turns into a vicious circle.
I feel its important to know from others, go for regular checkups, do not mind that Rs.1500 complete checkup mechanism in a reliable hospital. There is nothing to panic. During our parents days, there was lesser awareness, lesser facilities and people generalized their disease "as not keeping well". Atleast now, we have multiple mechanisms to know what is right and what is wrong. Lets be alert.

From the above two diseases, there is something common: "there is something in excess". Body reacts when it has more.

Is Green Tea bad for me?

I am big fan of Green Tea and I have tried almost all favours of Green Tea available in India. And I have been advocating it to all my friends.

Today, came across the latest news that Green tea strengthens teeth. (see link). But something struck me in the search results!  "skin rash"

Throughout my life I have been suffering skin rashes - painful boils on shoulders and back.

At the age of 15, I came to know that I have sulfa allergy. Later, a homeopathic doctor said I was allergic to brinjal (my favorite vegetable). But even these days, I am developing a lot of boils and rashes - I am wondering if those 'tannin's (see link) in the green tea causing all these?

What's wrong with my immunity?

Clinic Doctors; Every day heroes

You fall sick and you think of a neighbourhood clinic and your favorite doctor is there.  Sometimes you travel from one area to another area to meet the doctor.

Most of the clinics are very small that even your bathroom and the spiritual room would be bigger.  All that clinic need to have is a private room to see the patient and a small waiting area with plastic chairs.  You can make out the brands the doctor endorse from the colourful pamphlets that the medical representatives have offered.

But why do I call them 'every day heroes':  because he is someone whom you almost surrender to when you or your parents or your kid fall sick. When you come back home, with the prescription and the pills, you almost carry a confidence, that 'this (ailment) too shall pass'.

Have you noticed that whenever you waited in the small area, the other patients also have similar ailments - seasonal flu. When you cough, someone orchestrates to your tune and you hear an accompanying cough. If you were wearing sweater, you see the other guy also has a similar attire.

I never found a clinic doctor talking over mobile phone - never distracted. But you will see the other professionals getting or making calls during the duty hours.

We have a family doctor, and also our family friend in our native place. We also got to a doctor in Bangalore,  next to our house who happened to be of my native origin. The paedtrician where we take our kid is very friendly and Tamil speaking.

The Bangalore doctor is very old, and so disciplined and he does not allow anyone talking as they wait. Mobile ringing and conversations are discouraged.  The first thing he would say is 'Dont take bath!' (such advices are boon to me). His clinic is very simple, dull looking and no high tech gadgets. Another paedtrician whom I met recently had a title 'Adolescent consultant' - something I came across the first time.

Some doctors charge as less as Rs.30. While in hospitals, they - the same doctor - charge Rs.200.

Cancer and Great Lives

For the past few years I have been seeing or hearing of cancer cases in friends families. All that I learnt about cancer was a painful experience, chemotherapy, losing hair, thinning body and finally death. During childhood days, the cancer was primarily a cinema plot element.

Some friends' parents losing their lives.I am sure for the future generation, they would certainly will have a scientific solution for cancer. Recent days Cyberknife as a new technology (Robotic Radio Surgery system) is known to be available in Bangalore. I hope there are free services for the poor.

Today morning, I was reading Jiddu Krishnamurthy's biography (The book I have is this).

He was one of the greatest philosophers of the century who died of cancer. My spiritual guru Bhagawan Ramana Maharishi too died of cancer. I was wondering if there is something that can be attributed to great personalities and cancer?

I asked myself. I asked the internet God - Google.  I came across this website: http://www.katinkahesselink.net/other/shearman14.html

A question which is sometimes asked about the occurrence of cancer is why cancer seems so often to attack people of outstanding and saintly character and exceptional wisdom. The cases of Sri Ramakrishna, Ramana Maharshi or J. Krishnamurti, and many others, are cited. The thought that comes to mind is that these were people who were nearing the end of a phase of human life and were soon to enter upon a higher quality of existence. A new adjustment of forces had to be made and a final "balancing of the books" had to take place before they were liberated into a higher and more completely fulfilling quality of living. A "dweller on the threshold" had finally to be met at that particular entrance into a new life.

It seems reasonable to imagine that as advanced individuals move on into the next stage of evolution, and the interplay between individual personal self and the greater Self achieves effective harmony, and duality yields to unity, then the sort of adjustment that finds its expression in cancer will no longer be necessary.

Not really answering my query...but I have something to ponder about.

Catching Cold

The weather looks good; but feels bad. Common cold is back - its so common that everybody seems to be saying "i too have cold". Is a climate change phenomena that everyone catching cold at the sametime? Well, today's research report clarifies my doubt:

Researchers have found that the common household surfaces like TV remote control, refrigerator door handles and bathroom taps are the hotspots to spread cold virus. By touching these contaminated surfaces, the virus could transfer to another and cause a cold infection.

So, know that your door knobs and remote controls are the top germ carriers. Read on more here.

Glaucoma Suspect

The eye specialist suggested that I go for Glaucoma test as I am a Glaucoma suspect. The pressure conditions in my eyes made me a suspect. The doc says it could be hereditary but none of my family members have this. The doc suggests that there symptoms would not be that prominent, so, its better one undergoes regular checkup. I will be going for the test in another couple of days.

Here is a good faq on the glaucoma:
